Iğdır-Tuzluca Rock Salt Mine is one of the major historical rock-salt sites of Eastern Anatolia. Its location close to the Aras basin, thick salt-bearing formations and long mining history make Tuzluca a central entry in Türkiye’s rock-salt inventory.

Geography of Tuzluca
Tuzluca lies in Iğdır Province within the wider Aras Valley region. Older reports may record Tuzluca under Kars because administrative boundaries changed over time; historical references must therefore be interpreted using the geography of their own period.
Evaporite Geology
The Tuzluca area belongs to a sedimentary and evaporitic system in which halite occurs with other soluble and fine-grained sedimentary units. Tectonic deformation and erosion have helped expose or make accessible parts of the salt-bearing sequence.
Historical 800-Million-Tonne Figure
Some regional and historical sources refer to a rock-salt potential of roughly 800 million tonnes for the Tuzluca area. This figure should be presented as a historical or geological estimate from its source, not automatically as a current economically recoverable reserve.
Mining and Cultural Heritage
The underground salt galleries are part of Tuzluca’s mining heritage and regional identity. Salt production has historically supported local transport, labour and trade networks and has contributed to the district’s name and public image.
Environmental Context
Natural dissolution of evaporites can influence groundwater and surface-water chemistry even without mining. Where extraction occurs, groundwater control, gallery stability and separation of natural salinity from operational effects are important topics.
