Nevşehir Gülşehir-Tuzköy Rock Salt Deposit: Oligocene Geology, Eight Boreholes, Reserves and Cappadocian Salt Heritage

The Gülşehir-Tuzköy rock-salt deposit in Nevşehir: Oligocene evaporite geology, MTA drilling including eight boreholes, reserve studies and the salt heritage of Cappadocia.

Nevşehir Gülşehir-Tuzköy Rock Salt Deposit is one of the documented rock-salt sites of Central Anatolia. It lies within the wider Cappadocian region, where volcanic landscapes coexist with older sedimentary basins and evaporitic deposits.

Geographical and Geological Setting

The Gülşehir-Tuzköy area belongs to the Central Anatolian salt belt and is commonly evaluated within Oligocene evaporite geology. Halite-bearing strata occur within a broader sedimentary succession deposited in ancient closed-basin conditions.

Eight Boreholes and MTA Investigation

MTA carried out detailed geological and reserve work at the Tuzköy site, including drilling programmes reported as comprising eight boreholes. Borehole data are critical for determining salt thickness, depth, continuity and interbedded non-salt units.

Reserve Terminology

Historical reserve figures for Tuzköy should not be detached from the original report’s date and methodology. Geological resources, measured reserves and economically recoverable reserves are not interchangeable terms.

Salt Heritage of Cappadocia

The salt deposits of Gülşehir and nearby Hacıbektaş-Arapsun show that Cappadocia’s geological heritage is not limited to volcanic tuffs and erosion landforms. Evaporite resources also formed part of regional economic history.
