Sivas Hamo Spring Saltworks: MTA Records, Naming Issues, Hydrogeology and Traditional Salt Making

The Hamo spring saltworks in Sivas: MTA documentation, geographical naming issues, saline-groundwater hydrogeology, traditional production and regional salt culture.

Sivas Hamo Spring Saltworks is one of the traditional saline-spring production sites documented in the Sivas region. It is included in regional salt inventories and in academic work examining the high-salinity environments of Sivas saltworks.

A Note on the Hamo Name

Historical and technical sources may use local place names differently from modern administrative records. For this reason, the name Hamo should be tied to the location and source in which it appears rather than assumed to represent a modern official settlement name without verification.

Hydrogeology

The spring-salt system is based on groundwater circulating through evaporitic sedimentary units. Water dissolves soluble salts underground and reaches the surface through fractures or permeable layers as naturally saline water.

Traditional Salt Production

Saline water is directed into shallow evaporation ponds. Summer heat, dry air and wind remove water, increasing brine concentration until halite crystals can be harvested. Production therefore depends on both geology and seasonal climate.

Scientific Importance

Hamo was among the Sivas saltworks examined in academic microbiology research. Such sites are natural laboratories for halophilic bacteria and archaea adapted to high salt concentrations.
