Sivas Hafik Spring Saltworks: 22 Baumé Brine, Oligocene Evaporites, Traditional Production and Rural Culture

The Hafik spring saltworks in Sivas: historically reported 22° Baumé saline water, Oligocene evaporite geology, traditional evaporation and rural salt culture.

Sivas Hafik Spring Saltworks represents the connection between the evaporite geology of central-eastern Sivas and traditional production from naturally saline groundwater.

22° Baumé Brine

Regional technical records report saline water at approximately 22° Baumé for the Hafik saltworks. Baumé is a historical density scale used for brines and should not be read as a direct percentage of sodium chloride.

Oligocene Evaporite Setting

The Hafik region contains evaporitic sedimentary units associated with Oligocene basin development. Groundwater circulating through these units can dissolve salts and emerge as saline springs.

Traditional Production

The production principle is solar evaporation: brine is distributed into shallow ponds and concentrated until salt crystallises. Seasonal climate, pond maintenance and local experience influence the harvest.
