Tuz Gölü Kaldırım Saltworks: Şereflikoçhisar, Lake-Salt Harvesting, TEKEL History, Privatization and Ecology

Kaldırım Saltworks at Tuz Gölü: Şereflikoçhisar geography, lake-salt harvesting, TEKEL-era history, later privatization and the ecology of a saline closed basin.

Kaldırım Saltworks is one of the major production areas associated with Tuz Gölü in Central Anatolia. The site combines seasonal lake-salt harvesting with a long institutional history and a sensitive saline-wetland environment.

Şereflikoçhisar and Tuz Gölü

Kaldırım is associated with the Şereflikoçhisar side of Tuz Gölü. The lake lies in a closed basin where dissolved salts become concentrated because water has no permanent outlet to the sea.

During the dry season, shallow lake water retreats and extensive salt crusts can form. This seasonal crystallisation is the natural basis of lake-salt production.

Lake-Salt Harvesting

Unlike underground rock-salt mining, Kaldırım production depends on salt that crystallises from modern lake brine. Harvesting therefore follows the hydrological and climatic cycle of the lake.

Rainfall, evaporation, water depth and inflow conditions all influence the thickness and timing of the salt crust.

TEKEL-Era History

The Turkish atlas records Kaldırım within the historical TEKEL salt-production system. State administration played an important role in organising production, infrastructure and distribution during that period.

Privatization and Operating History

The site’s later history includes changes in operating structure following privatization. Historical ownership and current operating arrangements should be distinguished when describing the saltworks.

Ecology

Tuz Gölü is also an important saline-wetland ecosystem. Salt harvesting therefore exists alongside habitats used by salt-tolerant plants, microorganisms and birds.

Kaldırım is part of the wider Tuz Gölü salt-production system together with Kayacık and Yavşan.
