Austria Rock Salt Deposits: Hallstatt, Altaussee, Salzburg-Dürrnberg and 7,000 Years of Mining

Austria's Alpine rock-salt deposits at Hallstatt, Altaussee and Salzburg-Dürrnberg, together with a mining tradition extending back roughly 7,000 years.

Austria’s Alpine salt districts are among the most historically significant rock-salt landscapes in Europe. Hallstatt, Altaussee and Dürrnberg near Salzburg combine complex Alpine geology with exceptionally long mining traditions.

Alpine Evaporites

Salt-bearing units in the Eastern Alps were strongly deformed during mountain building. Folding, faulting and tectonic transport created complex bodies very different from simple horizontal salt beds.

Hallstatt

Hallstatt is internationally associated with prehistoric salt mining and archaeological evidence of very early exploitation. The Turkish atlas frames the Austrian tradition as extending back roughly 7,000 years.

Altaussee

Altaussee is another major Austrian salt-mining centre, located within the Alpine evaporite belt. Its underground workings represent the continuing industrial importance of the region’s salt geology.

Salzburg and Dürrnberg

Dürrnberg near Salzburg is a major historical salt-mining landscape. Together with Hallstatt and Altaussee, it illustrates the close relationship between salt, Alpine settlement and trade.

Geoheritage

Austria’s salt mines are important not only as mineral resources but also as archaeological, historical and geological heritage sites within the Europe Rock Salt Atlas.
