Switzerland has a long salt-production history based on Alpine and foreland evaporite deposits. The Turkish atlas highlights Bex, Schweizerhalle and Riburg.
Bex Salt Mine
Bex is Switzerland’s classic underground salt-mining district and is treated in a separate detailed atlas article. Its galleries preserve centuries of mining history in the Alpine region.
Schweizerhalle
Schweizerhalle near Basel is an important Swiss salt-production area associated with subsurface halite and brine extraction.
Riburg
Riburg is another major production locality in the Swiss salt system. It belongs to the modern industrial geography of solution-mined salt.
Underground Halite Caverns
Where salt is extracted by solution mining, controlled cavities develop within the halite body. Their shape and stability are managed through engineering design and monitoring.
Two Mining Traditions
Switzerland therefore combines the historic underground-gallery tradition of Bex with modern brine and cavern-based production systems elsewhere in the country.
