Denmark Rock Salt Deposits: Hvornum Salt Dome, Mariager, Zechstein Halite and Solution Mining

Denmark's rock-salt geology through the Hvornum salt dome, Mariager, deep Zechstein halite and solution-mining methods.

Denmark contains deep salt structures related to the Zechstein evaporite system of northern Europe. The Turkish atlas highlights the Hvornum salt dome and the Mariager production area.

Zechstein Halite

Late Permian evaporation produced thick salt sequences beneath parts of Denmark. Later burial and salt movement created structural highs and domes.

Hvornum Salt Dome

Hvornum is a key Danish salt structure named in the atlas. Salt domes form when deeply buried evaporites move upward through overlying sedimentary rocks.

Mariager

Mariager is associated with Danish salt production from deep subsurface halite. The deposit is accessed through wells rather than conventional open-pit mining.

Solution Mining

Solution mining dissolves salt underground and pumps concentrated brine to the surface. It is particularly suitable for deep halite that would be difficult to mine directly.

Subsurface Geology

The Danish example shows why a country can possess major rock-salt resources even when there are no spectacular surface salt exposures.
