Ukraine contains several major rock-salt districts formed in different geological settings. The Turkish atlas highlights Soledar, Sloviansk, Solotvyno, the Donbas and the Precarpathian region.
Donbas Halite
Soledar and Sloviansk are associated with the eastern Ukrainian salt province and the Donbas basin. Thick evaporite sequences supported extensive underground salt mining.
Soledar
Soledar became internationally known for its vast underground salt workings. The atlas treats it as a major geological and mining locality; present operational conditions should be distinguished from the historical geological record.
Sloviansk
Sloviansk is another important salt district in eastern Ukraine, with a long relationship to brines, evaporites and salt production.
Solotvyno
Solotvyno lies in western Ukraine and belongs to a different Carpathian geological setting. Its salt deposits and historical underground workings form part of the Precarpathian salt province.
Multiple Salt Provinces
Ukraine is therefore not a single-basin salt country. Eastern Donbas evaporites and western Carpathian-related deposits must be treated separately in geological interpretation.
