How Does the Applied Geodynamics Laboratory Study Salt Tectonics? Physical Models, Finite Elements and Geological Studies

A detailed explanation of AGL’s three main methods for studying salt and mobile-shale systems.

The Applied Geodynamics Laboratory does not study salt tectonics with a single technique. Its official methodology page divides the research program into three main approaches: physical modelling, finite-element modelling and geological studies.

For related guides and articles, see the Scientific Salt Research section.

Physical Modelling

At laboratory scale, low-viscosity analogue materials represent ductile salt while granular materials reproduce brittle sedimentary cover.

Modular deformation rigs can simulate extension, shortening, strike-slip and gravity-driven deformation.

Finite-Element Modelling

Finite-element models numerically test the effects of stress, pressure, viscosity and geometry through time.

They help investigate mechanical variables that are difficult to measure directly in physical experiments.

Geological and Seismic Studies

Seismic images, well data and regional geology from real basins are compared with model results.

Combining all three methods allows experimental concepts to be tested against natural geological systems.
