Italy’s most important rock-salt deposits are concentrated in Sicily, where Messinian evaporites contain thick halite sequences exploited by underground mining.
Messinian Salinity Crisis
The Sicilian deposits belong to the Messinian evaporite system of the Mediterranean region. Extreme restriction and evaporation produced large volumes of evaporite minerals, including halite.
Realmonte
Realmonte is one of Sicily’s best-known underground rock-salt mines. The atlas treats it separately because detailed reserve and production information is available for the site.
Racalmuto
Racalmuto is another important Sicilian salt-mining district associated with the same broad Messinian evaporite province.
Petralia
Petralia extends the Italian inventory into another major underground mining area. Together with Realmonte and Racalmuto it demonstrates the scale of Sicily’s halite resources.
Canonical Italy Article
This page is the canonical country-level Italy entry in the atlas. Individual mines are linked separately where more detailed site-specific documentation is available.
