Sivas Hafik-Manastıraltı Saltworks: Rock Salt Outcrop, Fault Geology, 8–20° Baumé Springs and Historical Production

The Hafik-Manastıraltı saltworks in Sivas: rock-salt outcrop, fault-controlled saline springs reported at 8–20° Baumé and historical salt production.

Hafik-Manastıraltı Saltworks is a particularly interesting Sivas site because technical descriptions connect saline springs with a visible rock-salt outcrop and fault-controlled geology.

Rock Salt Outcrop and Fault System

Where evaporitic units approach the surface, erosion and faulting can expose salt-bearing rocks and provide groundwater pathways. Water moving through these units can dissolve halite before emerging as saline springs.

8–20° Baumé Range

Historical technical records refer to spring-water density values ranging from approximately 8 to 20° Baumé. Variation may reflect different outlets, seasons or measurement conditions and should therefore not be treated as a single permanent salinity value.

Historical Production

Traditional production relied on directing saline water to evaporation areas and using solar energy to crystallise salt. The site illustrates the close relationship between structural geology, hydrogeology and rural salt making.
