Spain Rock Salt Deposits: Cardona Salt Mountain, Remolinos Halite Mine and the Ebro Basin

Spain's rock-salt geology through the Cardona Salt Mountain, the Remolinos halite mine and evaporite deposits of the Ebro Basin.

Spain contains major rock-salt deposits formed in different sedimentary basins. The Turkish atlas highlights Cardona in Catalonia and Remolinos in the Ebro Basin as two key examples.

Cardona Salt Mountain

Cardona is famous for its spectacular exposed salt structure. The Europe atlas describes its salts as Eocene in age, roughly 40 million years old.

Erosion has exposed part of the salt mass at the surface, making Cardona one of Europe’s most visually distinctive evaporite landscapes.

Salt Tectonics at Cardona

Deep burial and deformation caused salt to move and rise relative to surrounding sedimentary rocks. This salt tectonics helped create the present structure.

Remolinos

Remolinos is highlighted as an important halite-mining locality in the Ebro Basin. It represents a different geological and mining setting from the exposed Cardona structure.

Ebro Basin

The Ebro Basin contains extensive evaporitic sequences deposited in a continental basin environment. These sediments include halite and other evaporite minerals.

Atlas Context

Cardona and Remolinos show why Spain’s rock-salt inventory must be described by basin and deposit rather than by a single national geological model.
