Kayacık Saltworks is one of the principal Tuz Gölü salt-production areas associated with the Şereflikoçhisar region. Its production cycle is directly linked to annual evaporation and salt-crust formation.
Annual Salt Crystallisation
Tuz Gölü is extremely shallow over large areas. As summer evaporation intensifies, water recedes and dissolved salts crystallise on the lake floor.
This repeating seasonal process creates the harvestable salt layer that distinguishes lake-salt production from mining ancient underground halite.
Production History
Kayacık has a documented role in the historical production geography of Tuz Gölü. The saltworks should be read together with Kaldırım and Yavşan, which formed the other major production units around the lake.
Closed-Basin Hydrology
Because Tuz Gölü is an endorheic basin, salts delivered by groundwater and surface inflow remain within the system. Long-term concentration under arid and semi-arid conditions produces the saline environment.
Halophytic Steppe Ecology
The surroundings include salt-tolerant steppe and wetland vegetation adapted to high soil salinity. These habitats are an important part of the ecological character of the Tuz Gölü basin.
Changes in water balance can affect both the salt-production cycle and the distribution of saline habitats.
Atlas Context
Kayacık is documented within the Türkiye Lake Salt Atlas and the detailed Tuz Gölü production file.
