A squeezed diapir is a salt structure that is narrowed, uplifted or otherwise reshaped by regional shortening after the diapir has already formed.
You can explore related material in the Martin P. A. Jackson section.
What Compression Does
Regional shortening compresses surrounding sediments while low-viscosity salt responds to the changing stress field.
A diapir may narrow, rise further or transfer salt into neighbouring structures.
Role of a Pre-Existing Structure
The squeezed-diapir concept emphasises modification of an existing salt body rather than creation of a completely new dome.
A diapir’s present shape may therefore record both its original rise and later tectonic events.
AGL Terminology
UT sources include squeezed diapir among the concepts popularised through AGL research.
The concept is useful for interpreting multi-stage salt structures in contractional settings.
