Yozgat Yerköy-Sekili Rock Salt Deposit is one of the most extensively investigated rock-salt sites of Central Anatolia. MTA archives contain drilling, underground workings, geophysical, reserve and geochemical studies dating back many decades.
More information on this topic is available in the Salt Mines of Turkey section.
Geographical Setting
Sekili lies around Yerköy in Yozgat, within the continental plateau landscape of Central Anatolia. Steppe vegetation, agricultural land and broad sedimentary basins dominate the surrounding geography.
Oligocene Evaporite Geology
The deposit belongs to the Central Anatolian evaporite systems commonly associated with Oligocene basin development. Halite occurs within a sedimentary succession that may include gypsum, anhydrite, clay and marl.
Historical 340-Million-Tonne Reserve Figure
MTA reserve studies have reported a historical figure of approximately 340 million tonnes for the Sekili salt deposit. As with all historical reserve data, this number should be read together with the date, investigation limits and classification system of the original report.
Exploration and Mining Research
Repeated exploration reflects the geological and economic significance of the deposit. Boreholes, geophysical methods and underground observations help establish depth, thickness, lateral continuity and the relationship between halite and surrounding sedimentary units.
