MTA and Medical Geology
In MTA publications Atabey presents medical geology as a multidisciplinary field concerned with the effects of the geological environment on human health.
MTA records identify mineral dusts such as asbestos, erionite and quartz; trace elements such as iodine, copper, zinc and selenium; toxic elements such as arsenic and mercury; and natural radioactivity and radon among the field’s research topics.
Field Projects
The 2008 Medical Geology Project report covers sampling of rocks, soils, waters and plants and examines geological exposure settings across the Black Sea, Central Anatolian and Eastern Anatolian regions.
The 2009 report extends field investigation across Mediterranean, Central, Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia, including mineral dusts, arsenic, fluorine and other geological environmental factors.
Elements and Health
Atabey’s book “Elements and Health” is a broad reference work on the definitions, properties, occurrences, uses and health effects of chemical elements.
This wider framework is useful when discussing natural mineral products such as rock salt because it distinguishes the presence of an element from its concentration, exposure route and biological significance.
