Who Is Prof. Tim K. Lowenstein? Halite Fluid Inclusions, Paleoseawater and Evaporite Geochemistry

A sourced profile of Tim K. Lowenstein’s research on halite fluid inclusions, ancient seawater chemistry and evaporite geochemistry.

Tim K. Lowenstein is a leading researcher in reconstructing ancient seawater chemistry from microscopic fluid inclusions trapped in halite crystals.

Research Program

Lowenstein and colleagues have analysed fluid inclusions in modern, Silurian, Permian, Cretaceous and older halites to reconstruct how seawater composition changed through geologic time.

This research treats halite not merely as an evaporite mineral but as a geological archive capable of preserving direct samples of ancient brines.

Validation with Modern Settings

A 2001 study showed that fluid inclusions in modern marine halites from Great Inagua, Bahamas, and Baja California faithfully record the chemical path of evaporating seawater.

Nonmarine examples such as the Qaidam Basin produced a distinct chemical signature.

Geologic Timescale

Later studies reconstructed major-ion chemistry in Silurian, Permian and Cretaceous seawater and, in 2023, examined strontium variation over roughly 550 million years.

Together these studies show that seawater chemistry has not remained constant through geologic time.
