What Is a Reactive Diapir? One of Martin Jackson’s Key Salt-Tectonics Concepts

The meaning of reactive diapirism in salt tectonics and its relationship to extension and faulting.

The term reactive diapir expresses the idea that salt rise is not driven by buoyancy alone; tectonic extension and thinning of brittle overburden can create space that allows salt to move upward.

For related guides and articles, see the Martin P. A. Jackson section.

Difference from Older Models

Older diapir models often imagined salt punching vertically through overlying rocks by buoyancy.

Jackson and AGL research demonstrated that in many cases the brittle overburden first extends and faults, creating space into which salt can rise reactively.

Extension and Faulting

As brittle cover extends, normal faults develop and local accommodation space increases.

Low-viscosity salt can flow into these areas and grow into a diapiric structure.

Impact of the Concept

Reactive diapir is listed by UT sources among the influential terms developed through AGL research.

The concept shifted interpretation toward the mechanics of the surrounding sedimentary cover.
