Tim Dooley has been one of the principal researchers leading the Applied Geodynamics Laboratory’s physical modelling program since 2003. His work reproduces salt movement under a range of tectonic settings at laboratory scale.

Modelling Laboratory
According to AGL’s methodology page, the physical-modelling laboratory contains three modular deformation rigs.
They can simulate gravity-driven and basement-involved structural styles in extension, shortening and strike-slip.
Recording Techniques
Experiments are recorded using high-resolution digital photography, laser scanning and digital image correlation.
This allows structural evolution to be tracked quantitatively through time.
Research Topics
Dooley’s BEG profile highlights salt-sheet advance, precursor diapir systems, syn-sedimentary thrusting and strike-slip reactivation.
The experiments simplify complex geological scenarios under controlled conditions to isolate their fundamental mechanics.
