The Salt Substitute in India Study (SSiIS) tested a reduced-sodium, added-potassium salt substitute in rural Indian adults with hypertension using a randomized double-blind design.
More information on this topic is available in the Scientific Salt Research section.
502 Participants
A total of 502 participants with hypertension from seven villages were enrolled.
They were randomized to regular salt (100% NaCl) or a 70% NaCl/30% KCl blend.
Three-Month Outcome
At three months, average systolic blood pressure was 4.6 mmHg lower in the salt-substitute group than in the control group.
The between-group difference in diastolic blood pressure was reported as 1.1 mmHg.
Urinary Biomarkers
Twenty-four-hour urinary potassium excretion increased and the sodium-to-potassium ratio decreased.
Participants reported using the study salt on most days and rated the taste of the two products similarly.
