The American Heart Journal abstract describes SSaSS as a five-year cluster-randomized trial involving 600 rural villages and 20,996 participants in China.
The intervention compared potassium-enriched salt substitute with usual salt.
Interim Biomarkers
A random subsample of villages was followed annually for 24-hour urinary sodium, urinary potassium, blood pressure and use of the study salt.
These measurements tested whether the intervention changed dietary exposure before the final stroke and cardiovascular outcomes were known.
