The 2020 Foods study directly sampled products from the Australian market, analysing 31 pink salts and one iodized white table-salt control.
For related guides and articles, see the Rock Salt Chemistry section.
Origins of Samples
Twenty-seven of the 31 pink salts were labelled as Himalayan, while other samples reported origins including Australia or Peru.
Products were sold in fine, coarse/grinder and flake forms.
Mineral Variation
The researchers found wide variability in calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, sodium and other measured elements.
For example, reported magnesium values ranged from about 147 mg/kg to 11,938 mg/kg.
Control Sample
A single iodized white table salt was used as the control.
The design strongly characterises variation among pink salts but was not intended as a comprehensive survey of all white-table-salt products.
