Pink-salt colour is often associated with mineral content. The 2020 Australian study tested this with coded colour categories and laboratory measurements rather than visual assumption alone.
More information on this topic is available in the Rock Salt Chemistry section.
Colour Categories
Samples were coded as dark, medium, light or colourless.
Among the 31 pink salts, 13 were dark, 11 medium, five light and three were reported in the no-colour category.
Darker Samples
The paper reported that darker pink salts generally tended to contain higher levels of minerals.
This statistical tendency does not mean every dark product has the same chemical composition.
Colour Is Not a Laboratory Analysis
Visual colour cannot substitute for laboratory measurement of specific mineral concentrations.
Even natural salts in the same colour category may differ substantially in elemental composition.
