How Did Rock Salts from Six Countries Differ? Comparing 18 Samples from Austria to Pakistan

Trace-element comparison of rock salts from Austria, Germany, Pakistan, Poland, Switzerland and Ukraine in the Steinhauser study.

Using one analytical method, the Steinhauser team compared 18 rock-salt samples from six countries to examine how trace-element profiles vary among natural salts.

You can explore related material in the Georg Steinhauser section.

Six Countries

Samples came from Austria, Germany, Pakistan, Poland, Switzerland and Ukraine.

Some were commercially available rock-salt products.

Element List

Detected elements included Al, Ba, Br, Ca, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Eu, Fe, Hf, La, Mn, Rb, Sb, Sc, Sm, Sr, Ta, Tb, Th and Zn among others.

The authors specifically noted that some elements occurred only in individual samples.

Geological Origin and Product Variation

Although halite is the dominant mineral, accessory minerals and trace elements can vary among deposits.

Rock salts from different countries should therefore not be assumed to have identical chemical profiles simply because they share the same product name.
