Why Is Halite a Chemical Archive of Ancient Oceans? A 550-Million-Year Record from Fluid Inclusions

A synthesis of modern, Silurian, Permian, Cretaceous and Neoproterozoic halite studies explaining why halite is a powerful archive of paleoseawater chemistry.

As halite grows, it can trap microscopic droplets of the surrounding concentrated brine inside the crystal. If primary fluid inclusions are preserved, they can retain chemically informative samples derived from ancient seawater for hundreds of millions of years.

A Direct Geological Sample

A fluid inclusion does not merely infer environmental chemistry indirectly; it physically traps a tiny portion of the brine present during crystal growth.

That makes halite a particularly powerful paleochemical archive compared with many proxy records.

Validated in Modern Environments

The 2001 Great Inagua and Baja California study showed that modern marine halite inclusions track the major-ion chemistry of evaporating seawater.

The contrasting nonmarine signature of Qaidam Basin samples supported the ability to distinguish different parent waters.

Hundreds of Millions of Years

Silurian, Permian and Cretaceous studies showed that ocean major-ion chemistry changed through geologic time.

The 2023 study extended the archive to strontium variation over roughly 550 million years using 1,371 inclusions from 131 halite samples.

Limits of the Archive

Not every halite sample provides a reliable paleoseawater record; primary inclusions must be preserved, marine origin established and later recrystallisation or recycling excluded.

Halite is therefore a powerful archive, but one that requires careful petrographic and geochemical validation.
