Siirt Spring Saltworks Atlas: Şirvan, Baykan, Pervari and Salt Making in the Botan Basin

A regional atlas of Siirt spring saltworks, covering Şirvan, Baykan, Pervari and the Botan Basin through geology, traditional production, history and rural economy.

Siirt Spring Saltworks Atlas documents the natural saline springs, historical saltworks and traditional salt-making culture of Siirt Province, especially around Şirvan, Baykan, Pervari and the wider Botan Basin.

Why Are There Saline Springs in Siirt?

The geology of southeastern Anatolia contains sedimentary sequences in which evaporitic and salt-bearing units occur. Groundwater moving through these soluble rocks can dissolve salts and return to the surface as saline springs.

Şirvan and Historical Saltworks

Şirvan is one of the most important historical spring-salt districts in Siirt. Ottoman records and later local documentation refer to multiple saltworks, wells and production installations in the region.

Traditional Wells and Solar Production

Some Siirt saltworks used saline water collected from natural outlets or shallow wells. Brine was distributed to shallow evaporation surfaces where solar heat and dry summer conditions concentrated the solution and produced salt crystals.

Botan Basin and Rural Economy

In mountainous southeastern Anatolia, local salt production historically supported food preservation, livestock keeping and regional trade. Saltworks could therefore form part of a wider rural economic network involving families, carriers, merchants and seasonal workers.

Research Structure of the Atlas

The Siirt atlas separates individual sites rather than treating all saline springs as one deposit. Şirvan Nöbetiya Valley, Zırki-Deklan, Melefan, Sulha-Hozyar and Küfre are examined as distinct historical or geological entries where source evidence permits.

Environmental Considerations

Natural salinity is part of the hydrogeology of these sites. Sustainable management requires protection of freshwater sources, controlled saline drainage and preservation of the recharge system feeding the springs.
