Siirt Şirvan-Küfre Historical Saltworks: 55 Salt Wells, 230 Evaporation Pans, Ottoman Monopoly and Salt-Making History

The historical Şirvan-Küfre saltworks: 55 documented saline wells, 230 evaporation pans, Ottoman salt-monopoly administration and traditional production history.

Şirvan-Küfre Historical Saltworks represent one of the larger documented spring-salt production systems in the historical Siirt region.

Fifty-Five Salt Wells

Historical records cited in the Turkish article list 55 salt wells. A network of this size points to intensive use of a saline groundwater system distributed across the production area.

Well counts belong to the documented historical period and should not be interpreted as a present-day operating inventory.

230 Evaporation Pans

The site is also recorded with 230 taba, or evaporation pans. These shallow surfaces increased the area exposed to sun and wind, allowing brine to become concentrated until salt crystals formed.

The combination of numerous wells and pans suggests a carefully organised seasonal production landscape.

Ottoman Monopoly Administration

Like other important saltworks, Küfre operated within an Ottoman fiscal environment in which salt production and trade were closely regulated. Administrative oversight helped create detailed historical records of production infrastructure.

Such records are valuable for reconstructing rural industry, taxation and commodity movement.

Salt-Making Heritage

Küfre belongs to the same wider regional tradition as Nöbetiya, Zırki-Deklan, Melefan and Sulha-Hozyar. Together these sites show how natural saline groundwater supported a distinctive salt-making economy in southeastern Anatolia.
