Erzurum Tortum-Sağırkaya Rock Salt Deposit: Historical 200-Million-Tonne Geophysical Potential, Tertiary Geology and Mining

The Tortum-Sağırkaya rock-salt deposit in Erzurum: historical geophysical estimates around 200 million tonnes, Tertiary evaporite geology, exploration methods and mining significance.

Erzurum Tortum-Sağırkaya Rock Salt Deposit is a documented evaporite site in northeastern Türkiye. The area is notable for historical geophysical work that identified a large subsurface salt potential.

Historical 200-Million-Tonne Potential

The original Turkish article reports a historical geophysical potential of approximately 200 million tonnes. This figure should be interpreted as an estimate derived from the investigation methods and limits of its period, not automatically as a modern economically recoverable reserve.

Resource, reserve and geophysical potential are different technical concepts. Any current commercial evaluation would require updated drilling, modelling and economic criteria.

Tertiary Evaporite Geology

The Sağırkaya area belongs to a Tertiary sedimentary setting in which evaporation in restricted basins produced salt-bearing sequences. Halite may occur together with gypsum, anhydrite, clay and marl.

Later tectonic deformation in Eastern Anatolia affected the geometry of these sedimentary units, making structural interpretation important for exploration.

Role of Geophysics

Electrical and other geophysical methods can help map the geometry of buried salt because evaporites may contrast with surrounding rocks in physical properties. Geophysics alone, however, cannot replace drilling when thickness, purity and continuity must be confirmed.

The historical Sağırkaya estimate is therefore most useful when read together with the survey design and the geological assumptions used in the original work.

Mining Significance

A large salt body can be important for underground mining, industrial raw material supply or future exploration, but mining feasibility also depends on depth, overburden, access, water conditions and market economics.

Sağırkaya is examined alongside Erzurum Oltu as part of the wider northeastern Anatolian rock-salt inventory.
