Çankırı Potuk Rock Salt Mine: Underground Mining, Room-and-Pillar System, Geology and Geographical Indication

The Potuk rock-salt mine in Çankırı: underground extraction, room-and-pillar mining, evaporite geology and its relationship with Çankırı's geographically indicated rock salt.

Çankırı Potuk Rock Salt Mine is one of the important underground mining areas within the wider Çankırı salt basin.

Underground Mining

Thick rock-salt bodies can be extracted through galleries developed inside the deposit. Access, ventilation, haulage and groundwater control are fundamental components of underground salt mining.

Room-and-Pillar System

Room-and-pillar mining leaves planned blocks of salt in place to support the roof while adjacent rooms are excavated. Pillar dimensions and extraction geometry are engineering decisions based on rock mechanics and mine design.

Evaporite Geology

Potuk belongs to the Çankırı evaporite system, where halite occurs with clay-rich and sulphate-bearing sedimentary units. The internal structure of the sequence controls both mining conditions and the quality of extracted material.

Geographical Indication Context

Çankırı rock salt has a strong regional identity. A geographical indication or origin claim should be understood through the official specification and producer traceability; the existence of a mine site alone does not establish the origin of every commercial product carrying a similar description.

Atlas Connection

Potuk is documented separately within the Çankırı Salt Atlas so that its mining method is not confused with Balıbağı, Germece or exploration-only areas.
