Türkiye Lake Salt Atlas: Tuz Gölü, Seyfe, Acıgöl and the Country’s Saline Closed Basins

A Türkiye lake-salt atlas covering Tuz Gölü, Seyfe, Acıgöl and other saline closed basins, with geology, salt production, mineral differences and wetland ecology.

Türkiye Lake Salt Atlas documents salt and other evaporite minerals formed in inland closed basins. These environments are fundamentally different from marine saltworks and underground rock-salt mines.

What Is a Closed Basin?

In a closed basin, water does not drain to the sea through a permanent river outlet. Dissolved minerals remain within the basin and become concentrated as water evaporates.

Over long periods this process can create saline lakes, salt crusts and mineral-rich sediments.

Tuz Gölü

Tuz Gölü is Türkiye’s best-known lake-salt production area. Seasonal evaporation creates broad salt crusts that have supported large-scale harvesting.

Seyfe Lake

Seyfe is a saline closed-basin wetland in Kırşehir with historical salt-production associations and important bird habitat. Ecological change and water balance are central to understanding the site.

Acıgöl

Acıgöl is mineralogically important but should not simply be described as a table-salt lake. Its industrial significance includes sodium sulphate and other mineral resources, demonstrating that not every saline lake has the same chemistry.

Ecology and Water Balance

Saline lakes are highly sensitive to rainfall, evaporation and groundwater abstraction. Falling water levels can alter salinity, exposed lakebed area, bird habitat and the timing of mineral precipitation.
