Türkiye 81-Province Salt Inventory: Where Are Rock Salt, Spring Salt, Sea Saltworks and Lake Salt Found?

A province-by-province salt inventory for all 81 provinces of Türkiye, distinguishing confirmed rock salt, spring salt, sea saltworks, lake salt, basin connections and research status.

Türkiye 81-Province Salt Inventory is a national index designed to answer a simple question carefully: what kind of documented salt geology or salt production exists in each of Türkiye’s 81 provinces?

Four Main Salt Categories

The inventory separates rock salt, spring salt, sea saltworks and lake salt. These categories are not interchangeable because they represent different geological sources and production methods.

Confirmed Does Not Mean Every Province Has a Salt Mine

A province is not marked as a rock-salt province merely because salt is sold or historically traded there. Confirmation requires geological, mining, official, academic or otherwise reliable documentary evidence.

Some provinces have a direct confirmed salt occurrence, some are connected to a broader geological basin or mineral system, and others remain in the research queue.

Rock Salt

Confirmed rock-salt provinces include areas with documented halite deposits, underground mines, surface occurrences or exploration evidence. Examples are examined in detail in the Türkiye Rock Salt Mines and Deposits Atlas.

Spring Salt

Spring-salt provinces are those where naturally saline groundwater has supported salt production. These sites are catalogued separately in the Türkiye Spring Salt Atlas.

Sea and Lake Salt

Marine saltworks such as Çamaltı and Ayvalık are separated from inland lake-salt landscapes such as Tuz Gölü and Seyfe. Acıgöl is additionally distinguished for its broader mineral-salt chemistry.

Research Status

The inventory is intentionally conservative. ‘Not yet confirmed’ means that the initial evidence review did not establish a reliable salt occurrence; it does not prove that no salt-related geology exists in the province.

This status-based method prevents the atlas from turning an incomplete search result into a false geological claim.
