Neal and a large international team published the Salt Substitute and Stroke Study results in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2021.
The trial was conducted in China among people with a history of stroke or adults aged 60 years or older with hypertension.
Composition of the Substitute
The salt substitute contained 75% sodium chloride and 25% potassium chloride by mass.
The comparison group continued using regular salt.
Outcome Research
The study evaluated stroke, major cardiovascular events, death from any cause and hyperkalemia among other outcomes.
It is an important example combining nutrition, electrolyte composition and clinical outcomes in one intervention.
