Çankırı Balıbağı Rock Salt Site is the best-known underground salt landscape of the Çankırı basin and includes the area associated with the famous salt cave and extensive gallery system.
Underground Galleries and Salt Cave
Mining created large underground openings within the salt body. These galleries are important both as mining infrastructure and as part of Çankırı’s modern cultural and tourism identity.
Gallery geometry and stability depend on salt thickness, pillar design, roof conditions and the behaviour of surrounding sedimentary units.
Geophysical Surveys
MTA investigations used geophysical methods to examine the continuation and geometry of the salt body beyond exposed workings. Such methods help identify contrasts between salt and surrounding rocks but require drilling for confirmation.
Boreholes
Exploration boreholes provide direct evidence of the depth, thickness and internal layering of the salt-bearing succession. They also reveal non-salt intervals such as clay, marl, gypsum or anhydrite.
Warm Water and Hydrogeology
The Turkish source also records warm-water observations in the broader investigation area. Water is especially important in salt mining because halite is highly soluble; groundwater pathways must be understood both for mine safety and for regional hydrogeology.
Place in the Çankırı Atlas
Balıbağı is one component of the Çankırı Salt Atlas, alongside Potuk, Germece, Yenidoğan and Ovacık.
