Tim Dooley, Martin Jackson and Michael Hudec’s 2023 Physical-Model Study of Salt Canopies

The 2023 AAPG Bulletin study using physical models to investigate growth and evolution of salt canopies on a salt-detached slope.

A 2023 paper by Tim P. Dooley, Martin P. A. Jackson and Michael R. Hudec used physical models to investigate the growth and evolution of salt canopies on a salt-detached slope.

More information on this topic is available in the Martin P. A. Jackson section.

Study Topic

AGL’s 2023 news page lists the paper as “Growth and evolution of salt canopies on a salt-detached slope: Insights from physical models.”

The study appeared in volume 107 of AAPG Bulletin.

Why Physical Models?

Salt-canopy systems are three-dimensional structures that evolve continuously through time.

Physical modelling allows the effects of source-layer movement, slope, sedimentation and structural obstacles to be tested under controlled conditions.

Continuity of AGL Research

The study combines Jackson’s conceptual legacy in salt tectonics with Dooley’s physical-modelling expertise and Hudec’s kinematic and seismic approach.

It therefore represents continuity in a decades-long AGL research program rather than an isolated case study.
