Nancy R. Cook is an epidemiology and biostatistics researcher associated with Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In the salt literature she is especially known for the long-term cardiovascular follow-up of the Trials of Hypertension Prevention.

TOHP I and TOHP II
Cook’s 2007 BMJ paper analysed 10–15 years of observational follow-up after two completed randomized sodium-reduction trials.
At baseline, 744 participants in TOHP I and 2,382 in TOHP II had been randomized to sodium reduction or control.
Long-Term Follow-Up
After the intervention periods ended, investigators tracked myocardial infarction, stroke, coronary revascularisation and cardiovascular death.
The paper reported a lower long-term risk of cardiovascular events in the sodium-reduction groups.
Design Feature
Although the original interventions were randomized, the long-term outcome analysis was observational follow-up after the trials.
That distinction provides important methodological context for interpretation.
