How Do Halite Fluid Inclusions Record Ancient Seawater? The 2001 Lowenstein Study

The 2001 study testing how faithfully fluid inclusions in modern marine halite preserve seawater chemistry.

The 2001 paper by Timofeeff, Lowenstein and colleagues is a key methodological study for using fluid inclusions in halite to reconstruct seawater chemistry.

More information on this topic is available in the Rock Salt Chemistry section.

Research Question

The core question was how faithfully liquid trapped in modern marine halite preserves the chemical signature of its source seawater.

Halite from modern environments was analysed to test this.

Bahamas and Baja California

The study included halite from a solar saltwork on Great Inagua Island in the Bahamas and a supratidal sabkha in Baja California.

The authors found that modern marine halites can faithfully record major-ion seawater chemistry.

Application to Ancient Rock Salt

Calibration with modern samples supports the use of fluid inclusions in geologically old halite to reconstruct paleoseawater.

Ancient rock-salt crystals can therefore serve as records of changing ocean chemistry through geological time.
