A 2023 study demonstrated the geological archival power of halite using a large dataset: 1,371 fluid inclusions from 131 halite samples.

1,371 Fluid Inclusions
The researchers analysed fluid inclusions in halite samples consistent with marine 87Sr/86Sr values.
The goal was to reconstruct seawater strontium concentrations across the Phanerozoic and Neoproterozoic.
Seven-Fold Variation
The study reported roughly seven-fold variation in seawater Sr concentration over approximately 550 million years.
The oscillations were interpreted in relation to Ca-rich, sulfate-poor paleoseawater intervals and calcite–aragonite sea states.
Scientific Value of Rock Salt
The dataset shows that microscopic fluid inclusions in halite can be used to investigate global ocean history far beyond individual salt deposits.
Rock salt therefore carries economic, mineralogical and paleochemical scientific value.
