Tim P. Dooley is a structural geologist and Research Professor at the Bureau of Economic Geology and the University of Texas at Austin. His specialty is scaled analogue modelling of fault systems and the three-dimensional evolution of salt tectonics.
More information on this topic is available in the Scientific Salt Research section.
Joining AGL
Dooley joined the Applied Geodynamics Laboratory from Royal Holloway in 2003 and took charge of its physical modelling facilities.
He worked closely with Martin Jackson and Michael Hudec on a wide range of salt-tectonic scenarios.
Modelling Method
AGL experiments reproduce ductile salt flow together with faulting of brittle sedimentary cover at laboratory scale.
High-resolution photography, laser scanning and digital image correlation allow model evolution to be tracked in three dimensions.
Research Areas
Dooley’s work includes gravity-driven salt tectonics, salt-sheet advance, strike-slip reactivation, delta tectonics and contractional evaporite basins.
Recent BEG descriptions emphasise the central role of his physical models in advancing understanding of salt structures.
