Why Do Potash and Magnesium Salts Form After Halite? Residual-Brine Chemistry

The geochemical logic behind enrichment of K, Mg, Li and other elements in residual brines after halite precipitation.

As halite precipitates, large amounts of sodium and chloride are removed from brine as solid NaCl. Potassium, magnesium and other relatively conserved components become progressively enriched in the residual brine.

You can explore related material in the Rock Salt Chemistry section.

Fractional Precipitation

Different minerals reach saturation at different stages of evaporation.

As each mineral precipitates, the chemistry of the remaining solution changes and prepares conditions for later mineral phases.

Potash Stage

USGS Earth MRI summaries present the typical marine sequence as gypsum/anhydrite → halite → sylvite.

Potash deposits therefore commonly represent very advanced stages of evaporation.

Enrichment of Critical Elements

Residual brines can also become enriched in elements such as Mg and Li.

Evaporite basins are therefore broader geochemical resource systems, not merely sources of NaCl.
