Martin Jackson’s Oakwood Salt Dome Study: Halite Deformation, Recrystallisation and Groundwater

Jackson’s 1985 Oakwood Dome study of rock-salt deformation, recrystallisation and groundwater dissolution.

Martin Jackson’s 1985 Oakwood Dome study is a classic investigation of natural deformation in diapiric rock salt using core and structural evidence.

More information on this topic is available in the Martin P. A. Jackson section.

Core and Structural Analysis

Jackson analysed natural strain and structural geometry in core recovered from the Oakwood salt dome.

The study interpreted the well as cutting the hinge zone and lower limb of an inclined overturned antiform.

Groundwater and Dissolution

Structural evidence suggested that the crest of the diapir had been truncated by groundwater dissolution.

The uppermost roughly two metres of rock salt were reported to have recrystallised in the presence of water.

Flow Behaviour of Halite

Strains recorded in the Oakwood halite were of the flattening type, with strain intensity decreasing upward.

The observations provide important field evidence that solid halite can deform ductilely over geological timescales.
