The long-term follow-up of the Trials of Hypertension Prevention is an important study examining whether earlier sodium-reduction interventions were associated with later cardiovascular outcomes.
You can explore related material in the Scientific Salt Research section.
Initial Intervention
TOHP I and II randomized adults aged 30–54 years with prehypertension to sodium-reduction interventions or control.
Education and counselling lasted 18 months in TOHP I and 36–48 months in TOHP II.
Sodium Reduction
The BMJ paper reported net reductions of 44 mmol/24 h and 33 mmol/24 h in the intervention groups.
Long-term follow-up was conducted 10–15 years later.
Cardiovascular Outcomes
The paper reported lower cardiovascular-event risk in adjusted analyses among participants originally assigned to sodium reduction.
The authors concluded that this was consistent with a possible long-term cardiovascular benefit of sodium reduction previously shown to lower blood pressure.
